Sheriff's Deputies seize a total of 1,097 pounds of Marijuana on two different traffic stops

Deputies from the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office have seized more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana with a street value over $800,000 in the last three days.

At approximately 11:17 a.m. Tuesday, deputies stopped a GMC Yukon on eastbound I-70 west of the Auburn Road exit for failure to maintain a single lane of traffic. Deputies asked for and were denied permission to search the vehicle. Deputies then deployed a certified narcotic K-9 on the vehicle. After the K-9 indicated positive to drugs inside the vehicle, deputies located 262 pounds of marijuana inside with a street value over $200,000.

The driver and only person in the vehicle, Albert Powell III, 26, of Aurora, Colorado, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, no Kansas drug tax stamp, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

On Saturday May 13, 2006, at 9:49 a.m. deputies stopped a Chevy pickup pulling an asphalt/tar-trailer on eastbound I-70 near the Auburn Road exit for an illegally displayed tag. After receiving consent to search the vehicle and trailer deputies found 835 pounds of marijuana located in the asphalt/tar-trailer with a street value over $600,000.

The driver Boyd Hatfield, 51, of Columbus, Ohio and Jack Rager, 50, of Racine, Ohio, were arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, no Kansas drug tax stamp, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
