37 kilograms of cocaine seized at the Ambassador Bridge

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Ambassador Bridge have seized 37 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated street value of $4.7 million. This is the second significant cocaine seizure made at the Ambassador Bridge this year.

"This seizure clearly demonstrates the excellent work our officers are doing to tackle the smuggling of illegal drugs at our borders," said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. "Securing our borders from drugs is critical for making our communities safer."

The drugs were uncovered on April 7, 2007, by CBSA officers who were examining a tractor-trailer that had been referred to the Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS) X-ray images of the vehicle's shipment revealed an anomaly that prompted a further examination of the contents. The officers discovered two boxes containing a total of 35 vacuum-sealed bricks of cocaine placed within the tractor trailer's load of frozen ice cream.

Two individuals from Brampton, Ontario, were charged with importing a controlled substance and possession for the purposes of trafficking.
