Canadian officers find 182 kilos of hash oil and marijuana hidden in shipment of yams

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Port of Halifax have seized over 182 kilos of hash oil and marijuana worth an estimated street value of over $5 million. The seizure was a joint operation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"I want to commend our border services officers for this seizure that clearly demonstrates the excellent work they continue to do on behalf of all Canadians,' said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. "Drug seizures of this magnitude show that the CBSA and its partners are making a real difference in keeping drugs off our streets and out of our communities."

Officers discovered the drugs on July 20, 2007, while searching a marine container from Jamaica that was bound for Toronto. The shipment consisted of 1,345 cases of yams.

The container was run through an X-ray machine that identified an anomaly in the cargo. CBSA officers removed the contents and found the drugs hidden in the cases of yams.
