January 18, 2009 Mexico City, Mexico Mexico Police intercept a
woman with $89,200 US Dollars at Airport
The Federal Police of Mexico, assigned to the
International Airport of Mexico City "Benito Juárez", intercepted María de la Paz Velázquez
Salinas (54 years old) who was transporting among her articles of clothing $89,200 U.S. dollars that
was not declared before Customs. The woman was detained at the gate when the federal agents carried out
random reviews of carry-on luggage of the passengers of the flight number 631. Her intended flight was going
from Mexico to San José, Costa Rica. During the inspection, the Federal Police noticed some lumps located
near the abdomen of Velzquez Salinas. She was escorted to the offices of the Federal Police and then
transferred to the installations of the Division Specialized in Organized Crime (I SEDATE) in the airport.
There Velázquez Salinas and her belongings where searched.
When searching Velazquez Salinas, they found money
hidden in the stitching of her pants, adhered to her abdomen, in her purse, in the stitching of her
underwear, in the collar of the sweater and blouse and in her hair as well as two rolls of money inside two
condoms and another packet in a sanitary towel kit. The total amount of money found was $89,200 US dollars.
Velazquez Salinas was arrested and held by the Public Ministry for further investigation.
