CBP Agents seize 35 lbs of marijuana from a Jeep Cherokee at the border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge discovered over $35,000 in marijuana hidden within the cargo area of a Jeep Cherokee; one Mexican citizen was arrested.

On April 8, 2009 at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge, CBP officers encountered a green Jeep Cherokee driven by Juan Carlos Del Angel, a 26-year-old Mexican citizen and resident of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico and referred him for a secondary inspection. CBP officers' searched of the Jeep revealed irregularities with the interior of the vehicle. "Gulliver," a narcotic detector dog, alerted officers to the odor of narcotics emanating from the Cherokee.

 Further intensified examination by CBP officers, revealed 15 packages with a combined weight of more than 35 pounds of marijuana hidden within the cargo area of the Jeep Cherokee.The driver was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who investigated the seizure. Juan Carlos Del Angel was processed by the Brownsville Police Department on state drug charges.
