Arizona 508 pounds of marijuana found hidden within a load of
watermelons.
On May 5, 2009, an Arizona Department of Public
Safety (DPS) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer stopped a commercial vehicle traveling northbound on
Interstate 17 near New River for a traffic violation and inspection. The driver had picked up a load of
watermelons in Nogales, Arizona. After obtaining written and verbal consent to search the vehicle, another
DPS officer discovered plastic wrapped bundles of marijuana in three bins toward the front of the trailer.
The total amount seized was 508 pounds. The driver, Anthony Moyd, 39 years of age, was
traveling from Nogales, Arizona to Massachusetts. Moyd was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana
for sale, transportation of marijuana for sale and operating an illegal enterprise. The commercial vehicle is
owned by Coanel Trucking Company in New Jersey.
