340 pounds of methamphetamines seized from a shipment of carrots
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working
at the Pharr cargo facility seized close to 340 pounds of methamphetamines on May 9,
2009.
CBP officers working at the Pharr cargo facility
intercepted a northbound commercial shipment of carrots. A 41-year-old male driver, operating a Mexican
registered tractor-trailer arrived at the Pharr cargo facility and declared a commercial shipment of
carrots.
After primary, the driver, tractor-trailer and the
commercial shipment of carrots were referred to secondary for an intensive examination. While in secondary,
the tractor-trailer rig was referred for a non-intrusive image scan. X-ray images revealed anomalies within
the trailer's floor. While conducting an intensive examination of the tractor-trailer rig, officers found 130
methamphetamines packages hidden within the trailer's floor.
The driver, a Mexican citizen from the State of
Tamaulipas, Mexico was not immediately arrested. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents
continue to investigate this failed smuggling attempt. CBP officers seized the tractor-trailer rig and the
methamphetamines.
