Mitchell David & Silas Benedict were arrested for try to smuggle MDMA

On July 1, 2009 U.S Customs and Border Protection officers encountered Mitchell David (53 years of age) and Silas Benedict (50 years of age), both Canadian citizens from Cornwall Island, Ontario, as they applied for admission into the United States at the Massena, N.Y., port of entry. A cursory inspection of the vehicle's spare tire revealed irregularities, and both subjects were referred to CBP for a secondary enforcement exam.

During the inspection of the subject's pick-up truck, CBP officers used a portable contraband detector device called "Buster" that locates density anomalies concealed behind opaque surfaces, such as door panels and fuel tanks. A higher than normal reading was detected on the vehicle's spare tire. The tire was then cut open, revealing 50 plastic sandwich bags containing approximately 50,000 star shaped tablets weighing about 33 pounds. The tablets later field-tested positive for MDMA (Ecstasy).

David and Benedict were arrested on federal charges of importation and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance. They were turned over to agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation and prosecution by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York.
