ICE agents seize approx. 500 kilograms of cocaine at sea
The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) today
announced the interception of a yawl 15 miles north of sector
Borinquen in Aguadilla, PR, carrying approximately 500 kilograms of
cocaine. Three men were also arrested during the enforcement
action.
At approximately 9:25 p.m. on Aug 18, 2003, a C-12 Marine Patrol
Airplane assigned to the Air & Marine Unit of the Bureau of
Immigration and Customs Enforcement began a patrol of the
northwest part of Puerto Rico. Thirty minutes into the patrol, a radar
operator identified a surface target of interest (STOI) in the area,
which generated the dispatch of a Blackhawk helicopter at 11:38 p.
m. ICE personnel then notified the Maritime Unit of the Puerto Rico
Police Department (PRPD). The PRPD intercepted the 22-foot yawl
at approximately 11:54 p.m. The vessel was carrying three men, all
citizens of the Dominican Republic, and approximately 500 kilograms
of cocaine.
“This is a tremendous effort,” said Robert G. Medina, ICE Interim
Special Agent-in-Charge in San Juan. “It shows the commitment of
Federal and local law enforcement agencies alike to fight crime.
We're sending a clear message that we will investigate and
prosecute those involved in criminal activity in our jurisdiction.
Today, thanks to the diligent efforts of the agencies involved—the
Air and Marine Unit of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and
the Puerto Rico Police Department—500 kilograms of cocaine will be
kept off our streets,” said Medina.
The suspects are currently in the custody of Immigration and
Customs Enforcement. Formal charges are expected to be filed
soon.
