Heroin-filled Cylinders Found by Border PatrolPosted on June 13, 2014
On Friday, June 13, 2014, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, along with U.S. Border Patrol agents, performed a sweep of vehicles waiting in line at the Paso Del Norte international crossing in El Paso, Texas.
When a canine alerted to the presence of narcotics along the undercarriage of a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, agents performed an examination of the vehicle and observed abnormalities in its appearance. The Chevrolet was then scanned through the Z-Portal x-ray system, which showed concerns around the drive shaft.
A subsequent search yielded 11 heroin-filled cylinders concealed within the drive shaft. This find weighed in at 25.4 pounds, with an estimated street value of $812,800.
The Chevrolet driver, a 32-year-old female U.S. citizen, was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations. She now faces charges associated with the smuggling attempt.
