Nearly 2 Tons of Marijuana Seized in Christmas-themed ShipmentPosted on August 28, 2014
On the afternoon of Thursday, August 28, 2014, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa Cargo Facility in California referred a 1998 Kenworth tractor-trailer for further inspection. According to the manifest, the trailer was transporting a shipment of Christmas bows.
When run through an imaging system, the trailer’s cargo was found to contain a number of abnormalities. Officers conducted a thorough search and discovered the boxes of Christmas bows to contain a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana.
In all, 209 large boxes of marijuana, weighing almost 2 tons, were discovered inside the trailer. The estimated street value of this find is $1.5 million.
The tractor-trailer driver, a 28-year-old male Mexican citizen was arrested and transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center. His narcotics and tractor-trailer were seized.
