Doctor Sentenced to 12 Months In Prison for Drug TraffickingPosted on June 26, 2014
On Thursday, June 26, 2014, it was announced that Chief U.S. District Attorney Judge William M. Skretny sentenced 59-year-old John E. Maye, a licensed physician of Rochester, New York, to 12 months in prison for illegally prescribing opioids.
According to U.S. Attorney Frank T. Pimmel, Maye authorized almost 10,000 online prescriptions for Hydrocodone, Valium, Ambien, Xanax, Vicodin, and other such medications for approximately 12,000 patients he had never even seen. This prescription trafficking afforded Maye illegal earnings of $1.1 million between 2004 and 2006, making him one of the largest drug dealers in the area.
Maye’s illegal activities were ultimately brought to an end following a joint investigation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Food and Drug Administration. A federal jury subsequently found Maye guilty of unlawful distribution and dispensing of a controlled substance.
